PARIS ? Was Dominique Strauss-Kahn sincere and humble or unconvincing and laughable?
French reaction was divided Monday after the first public appearance by Strauss-Kahn, a French presidential hopeful until his May 14 arrest on accusations of sexual assault by a New York hotel maid.
A day after Strauss-Kahn's French TV interview, no one questioned saw a quick return to politics for the man once expected to run in next year's presidential race.
Strauss-Kahn told TF1 that his encounter with the Sofitel maid was a "moral failing" but insisted there was no violence. Charges against him were dropped.
Socialist stalwart Jack Lang said Strauss-Kahn appeared sincere and humble. But conservative party leader Jean-Francois Cope said he was "sad and laughable" and "it's time to turn the page."
