We recently completed the initial analysis of the 2010 Minnesota Crime Victim Survey and presented them at the United Against Violence Summit. The Crime Victim Survey is the result of a partnership between Greater Twin Cities United Way and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Justice Programs. This is the second time we?ve done the survey (the first was in 2007). Data was collected January-April of 2011, asking about experiences with crime in 2010. Using a mail survey methodology with a random sample of residents throughout Minnesota, we obtained a response rate of 60% (which is excellent for a mail survey and represents more than 6,000 completed surveys).

One of the main reasons for the Crime Victim Survey partnership is to obtain data around domestic violence, specifically: How many Minnesotans are affected by domestic violence, whether they call the police (and if not, why not), and what kind of actions they take in response to the violence.
We found that 5% of survey respondents reported they had experienced domestic violence in 2010. While that may not seem like a lot, translated into population numbers, that?s more than 200,000 adults experiencing domestic violence?just in 2010. Domestic violence victims are more likely to be young (ages 18-25), female, and single or divorced.
The ?average? domestic violence victim experienced more than three episodes of domestic violence in 2010 (actual average = 3.2) but reported?again on average?less than one of them to police. When asked why they didn?t call police, victims most often responded that it was a private matter (33%) or they didn?t want their partner to be arrested (32%). More than 1 in 4 (26%) said the abuse wasn?t bad enough to warrant calling police. Of particular concern (at least to me) are the more than 1 in 7 who didn?t call the police because they thought the abuse was their fault.
We also asked victims of domestic violence what they did in response. The most common action reported is to end the relationship: More than 1 in 3 respondents (35%) reported ending the relationship in response to the violence. I find that encouraging. It?s what I did when I was in a violent situation many years ago. (But not until the second incident. I figure anyone can make a mistake and lose their temper once. But twice?twice to me is a pattern and I ended the relationship immediately after.)
One in three got help from friends and/or family (I did that, too). A goodly number seek counseling?either private (17%) or religious (11%)?and 10% talked to an advocate.
And the 35% that reported ?no action taken?? Maybe they didn?t take any of the actions that we specifically asked about in the survey, but maybe they did something else. Maybe they decided to end the relationship if it ever happened again. There?s a lot we still don?t know.
?
What we do know is that domestic violence is pervasive and affects far too many people. Towards the end of the survey we asked whether people have experienced domestic violence in their lifetime (?In your lifetime, has a current or former spouse, significant other, partner, boyfriend, or girlfriend harmed you with an object or weapon, or pushed, shaken, slapped, kicked, punched, hit or choked you?). Sixteen percent of respondents answered in the affirmative. That means that approximately 646,000 Minnesotans have experienced domestic violence directly. This does not include children who may have witnessed the violence, or the perpetrators themselves, and nor does it include family members who may be affected by the violence, or friends, or neighbors, or co-workers. Domestic violence has a very long, insidious reach. In one way or another, it affects nearly all of us.
