Dave Collinsworth and Matt Bryson are a different story.
The Pioneer High football team will be under new leadership this fall as Woodland graduate and former University of Oregon lineman Collinsworth takes over for outgoing Bryson, who left the post to focus on his family. Fortunately for the Patriots, who are hoping to improve on last season's 4-6 campaign, the two have known each other for 25 years.
"Matt has been very helpful in the transition," Collinsworth said. "He's been a very good resource."
It doesn't hurt that Bryson still works at Pioneer.
"He's getting a feel for the campus, just with real basic stuff," Bryson said of his successor. "How things were run in the past, just kind of getting the lay of ... how things have flowed."
Collinsworth noted Bryson sharing his knowledge of the Patriots personnel next season, though Bryson downplayed his help on that matter.
"Now if I can just get him to come out and coach," Collinsworth joked about his predecessor.
The new coach already has several assistants in place. John Snow is in charge of quarterbacks, with Anthony Bosser set to start at the position, while Andrew Marquez, once a six-year-old ball boy for the Wolves when Collinsworth played at Woodland, will handle
the offensive and defensive backs and Jeff Taleafero will coach the lineman."They've been around, and they are coaches who I've known for a while," Collinsworth said.
Anthony Ramirez will run the defense, with the head coach controlling the offense.
"I think you could consider us a wing-T team, but we do different things," Collinsworth said of his style.
Justin Dye will back up Bosser, with a variety of backs available in the backfield.
"We've got some backs, we've got some guys who can carry the ball," Collinsworth said, noting Jacob Barker, Brady Penning, Brandon Medina and Brian Martinez. "You've got to have three guys that can carry the ball."
The team's strength, according to the new coach, looks to be defensive line, led by Wil Fata.
The backbone of the squad, though, will no doubt be Collinsworth.
"He's been up and running from day one," Bryson said. "He's dove in with two feet and taken charge since the first day he got the job."
And Collinsworth believes his players have appreciated that.
"I've asked a lot of them so far, and they've commited themselves, and I'm really happy with the attitude and the work ethic right now."
