On Tuesday, Google introduced a new suite of Google+ features tailored to business users, including Gmail integrated-videoconferencing and intra-office Google+ posts. In a blog post,?Google product manager?Clay Bavor said the features would be available in free preview mode through the end of next year. The catch: Your organization must already be signed up for the Google Apps business suite.?

"Whether you?re across the street or across the world, you can hold face-to-face meetings, share updates with colleagues and friends and work on a presentation together in real time," Mr. Bavor wrote this week on the company blog. "Like Google Apps, we think Google+ can help colleagues collaborate more easily and get things done?and get to know each other along the way."?

Google has been testing the Google+ functionalities for several months; among the companies that signed up for an early trial was Kaplan, the test-prep company. Bavor said Google would continue to integrate feedback from users.?

Although it has not released exact figures, Google said last year that more than 4 million businesses use Google Apps. For mid-sized to large companies, Google currently charges?$5 per user per month for the service. Businesses can use the suite to create shared workplaces, store files, and communicate securely.

Google has also introduced a free platform called Google Apps for Education.

Legalization of Undocumented Workers Proves Economically Advantageous in 7 States: Nevada, Virginia, Arizona, Florida, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico

Today, while immigration reform and fiscal responsibility are under discussion at the Republican National Convention, the Center for American Progress released ?The Consequences of Legalization Versus Mass Deportation,? outlining the economic and fiscal benefits of legalizing undocumented workers in Nevada, Arizona, Florida, Texas, Virginia, Colorado, and New Mexico. These findings highlight in concrete terms how devastating ?self-deportation? policy proposals would be for these states. By contrast, unleashing these workers? full potential by enabling them to earn legal status would dramatically grow state economies, increase tax revenues by billions of dollars, and create hundreds of thousands of jobs.

AP source: '14 MLB All-Star game goes to Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? The Minnesota Twins will host the 2014 All-Star game at Target Field.

A person with knowledge of the decision, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither the Twins nor Major League Baseball had announced it, confirmed the news on Tuesday. The decision was first reported by the Star Tribune.

The Twins scheduled a news conference for Wednesday afternoon to make an unspecified "major announcement regarding an upcoming event to be hosted at Target Field," which opened in 2010. The award of MLB's 2014 midsummer showcase to Minnesota has been widely expected for years. Commissioner Bud Selig has all but declared it several times previously.

The 2013 All-Star game is set for Citi Field, home of the New York Mets. The Kansas City Royals hosted this year's game at Kauffman Stadium.

Minnesota last hosted the All-Star game in 1985 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, where the Twins played for 28 seasons before moving into their open-air, limestone-and-glass ballpark on the other side of downtown Minneapolis. They've sold an average of 35,202 tickets per game this year despite the worst record in the American League. The Twins lost 99 games last season, too, but drew more than 3.1 million fans.

Tampa Bay, an expansion team in 1998, is the only AL team that hasn't hosted an All-Star game. Other than the Rays, the Twins had the longest current wait in the AL for the game. The Oakland Athletics are next, having hosted the game in 1987.

Miami and Washington, D.C., are the leading contenders for the 2015 game. Because home-field advantage for the World Series goes to the All-Star winner, Selig has said he's reluctant to interrupt alternating All-Star sites between the leagues.

The Minnesota Wild hosted the NHL All-Star game at Xcel Energy Center in 2004, and the Minnesota Timberwolves were the home team for the NBA All-Star game at Target Center in 1994.

Portland State University grad treasures education after life under ...

As commencement speaker Shangar Meman congratulated her Portland State University classmates in the South Park Blocks two weeks ago on completing the long road to a degree, she shared a little of her own harrowing journey.

Her life began in Kurdistan, Iraq, where she and her family suffered "constant atrocities" at the hands of the brutal regime of Saddam Hussein.

?"Coming from a country with virtually no viable education system, having to sit on the ground of a cold classroom floor just to learn in a school with shades of black and gray and filled with bullet holes," said Meman, 27. "I vowed I would never take any educational opportunity for granted moving forward."

?She was 11 when she and her family escaped the regime and came to America, settling in the Portland area. She was awed at what she saw at Durham Elementary School in Tigard: windows, carpeted floors and a "seemingly endless supply of books."

She was fluent in English by the time she was a senior at Tigard High School and is now on her way to becoming a lawyer. Meman has flourished in America, but she never forgot what Hussein did to her family and what he took from her.

In an interview, Meman said she was 7 when her grandfather was assassinated, likely the handiwork of Hussein's men.

Meman's paternal grandfather, Abdulrahman Qadir,? watched over her while her parents were at work.

Her family had lived with him while her father was building the family home. They had just moved into the new house, and Meman hadn't seen her grandfather, a 60-year-old imam, in 15 days.

Iraqi names

Iraqi people are given a first name and use their father?s first name as a last name. So Meman?s family created a last name when they came to America. Meman is the name of a Kurdish tribe from which they are descended.

She missed him, so she invited him for lunch. Qadir prayed at a nearby mosque at about noon on that sunny day in March 1992, and then set out on foot to join her. Meman and her mother had tucked her two little sisters in for a nap, and mother and daughter were singing in the kitchen while cooking.

"It was a happy day," Meman said.

A stranger came to the door and asked if they were related to a man named Abdulrahman, who had been shot near their home.

"My mother started running ahead of me because she didn't want me to see it," Meman said. "I was very stubborn, and I ran over there."

Just outside the gate to her house, Meman saw a crowd of people. The small girl darted through the throng, and saw her grandfather's body on the ground.

"Nobody would let me get close to him, so I started to collect his personal belongings around him. I grabbed his glasses. They were bloody and cracked."

She found a metal container full of candy he carried for her and her sisters. Qadir always carried melon gum, Meman's favorite. A witness said a black car drove past Qadir as he walked, and then Qadir dropped to the ground.

"They had shot him down," Meman said. "It just took one bullet."

The witness had heard nothing and thought the gunman used a silencer.

Hussein kept his people in constant fear, spraying bullets into neighborhoods ? especially the homes of Kurdish people, an ethnic minority that includes her family, Meman said.

?Until she was 18 or 19, she thought her grandfather's death was her fault because she asked him to visit, putting him in the wrong place at the wrong time.

She came to realize she was not to blame, and Qadir's murder was no random hate shooting. Her grandfather, who wrote a book on women's rights, was targeted for his beliefs, she said.

As head of a mosque, he often shared his views and had recently delivered a speech on Kurdish rights and equality for all people. His beliefs defied Hussein's, the dictatorial president who was hanged in December 2006 for crimes against humanity, including killing and torture.

Hussein and his regime remained a threat to Meman's family until they fled the country at night in 1996,her mother cradling Meman's 4-month-old sister in her arms.

They left after the U.S. government told them anyone with U.S. ties could be in danger. Meman's father worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development, facilitating the construction of schools and hospitals as an architect with language skills in Kurdish, Arabic, Farsi and English.

Meman said her family may have changed homes but carried with them her grandfather's beliefs. Her brother, born in the U.S., and three sisters are treated equally, and that support has helped Meman thrive.

She earned a bachelor's degree in political science and a minor in legal studies this August.

"Her story is moving and one that says a lot about her ability to work hard and persevere," said one of her professors, Richard Clucas, in an email nominating her to be the commencement speaker.

While in school, she interned for U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley; and state Rep. Jefferson Smith, now a candidate for Portland mayor.

Meman is taking a year off to study for the Law School Admission Test before applying for law schools at Lewis & Clark College, Willamette University and University of Oregon. She's also working as a case assistant at a downtown law firm, Gevurtz Menashe Larson & Howe, and running her own photography business, S.SAAD. ?

Meman said she hopes some day to return to Iraq to teach civics, a subject Iraqi universities don't offer. She also wants to recruit others to teach in Iraq.

"It will always be my home," Meman said. "My heart will always be there."

Hurricane Isaac storm surge tops levee in Plaquemines Parish

A storm surge from Hurricane Isaac topped a levee in Plaquemines Parish south of New Orleans early Wednesday, officials said, trapping those who chose not to evacuate.

Plaquemines Parish president Billy Nungesser said the 18-mile, 8-foot-high levee--which is not part of the near $15 billion federal levee system constructed after Hurricane Katrina--was in the process of being raised.

"We knew we had a potential storm surge of nine to 12 feet--we had an eight foot levee," Nungresser said on CNN. "We're trying to get the few people who have stayed out. We've got a serious situation over there."

[Live-blog: Hurricane Isaac batters New Orleans, Gulf Coast]

Isaac made landfall at 6:45 p.m. CDT Tuesday in Plaquemines Parish, and the slow-moving Category 1 hurricane--now centered about 50 miles southwest of New Orleans with maximum sustained winds topping 80 mph--is expected to dump as much as 20 inches of rain in several parts of Louisiana.

"Not only did we see the worst case scenario, it got worse than that by this storm just stalling," Nungresser said. "So the levees can only take so much."

Nungresser said there were reports of up to 12 feet of water in some homes. "This is something I've never seen before," Nungresser said. "And I rode out Katrina."

[Slideshow: Hurricane Isaac pounds Gulf Coast]

He said three parish residents, including a woman on a roof, were saved by a private boat. Rescue workers were waiting for conditions to improve--and skies to lighten--before attempting other rescues.

"We're working with U.S. Coast Guard to rescue people stranded on top of levee," Nungresser said at a press conference.

The southern end of the parish was under a mandatory evacuation order, though it's not clear how many residents followed it.

"There are homes inundated and some folks trapped by water in those homes," Guy Laigast, director of homeland security for Plaquemines Parish, told the Weather Channel.

[Related: Hurricane Isaac as seen from space]

"Over 150 people have had to be rescued from #Isaac flooding," CNN's Rob Marciano tweeted. "The majority were within mandatory evacuation zones."

According to News Orleans' Times-Picayune, Jesse Schaffer and his son have been rescuing stranded residents with their boat.

"We've rescued at least 23 people including children," Jesse Shaffer Jr. said.

The Army Corps of Engineers said the New Orleans levee protection system appeared to be working. Meanwhile, more than 500,000 customers were left without power in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, utility companies said. According to the Associated Press, most of the outages are in areas around New Orleans.

A tornado warning has also been issued in southern Mississippi.

Isaac's rain and winds buffeted the streets of Waveland, Miss., Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf Coast. Isaac was packing 80 mph winds, making it a Category 1 hurricane. It came ashore early Tuesday near the mouth of the Mississippi River, driving a wall of water nearly 11 feet high inland and soaking a neck of land that stretches into the Gulf. The storm stalled for several hours before resuming a slow trek inland, and forecasters said that was in keeping with the its erratic history. The slow motion over land means Isaac could be a major soaker, dumping up to 20 inches of rain in some areas. (AP Photo/Rogelio V. Solis)

(AP) ? Hurricane Isaac pushed water over a rural levee to flood some homes, knocked out power and immersed beach-front roads in Louisiana and Mississippi early Wednesday as it began a drenching slog inland from the Gulf of Mexico with a newly fortified New Orleans in its path.

Wind gusts of more than 60 miles per hour and sheets of rain pelted New Orleans, where people braced themselves for the storm behind levees that were strengthened after the much stronger Hurricane Katrina hit seven years ago to the day.

Officials say New Orleans' flood protections system were holding up so far as Hurricane Isaac storms through the area; the rural levee was not part of the new system.

"The system is performing as intended, as we expected; we don't see any issues with the hurricane system at this point," said Army Corps of Engineers spokeswoman Rachel Rodi.

She said the corps expected to be on "high alert" for the next 12 to 24 hours.

Isaac's dangerous storm surges and flooding threats from heavy rain were expected to last all day and into the night as it crawls over Louisiana, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami warned.

Water driven by the large and powerful storm pushed over the top of an 18-mile stretch of one levee in Plaquemines Parish south of New Orleans, flooding some homes in a thinly populated area. The levee is one of many across the low-lying coastal zone and not part of New Orleans' defenses.

As the rain continued and winds pushed across the Gulf Coast, it remained far too soon to determine the full extent of the damage.

Authorities in Plaquemines Parish believe some people may be trapped but were not sure how many may have remained despite an earlier evacuation order. Rescuers were waiting for the strong winds to die down later in the day before moving out to search.

"We did have two parish police officers that were stuck in a car there. We just found out they were rescued and are safe," said emergency management spokeswoman Caitlin Campbell. Two other parish workers in a boat rescued them.

Isaac was packing 80 mph winds, making it a Category 1 hurricane. It came ashore at 7:45 p.m. EDT Tuesday near the mouth of the Mississippi River, driving a wall of water nearly 11 feet high and soaking a neck of land that stretches into the Gulf.

The storm stalled for several hours before resuming a slow trek inland, and forecasters said that was in keeping with the its erratic history. The slow motion over land means Isaac could be a major soaker, dumping up to 20 inches of rain in some areas, and every storm is different, said Ken Graham, chief meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Slidell, La.

"It's totally up to the storm," he said.

Isaac's winds and sheets of rain whipped New Orleans, where forecasters said the city's skyscrapers could feel gusts up to 100 mph. The weather service said more than 9 inches of rain had fallen in New Orleans in the 24 hours up to 7 a.m..

Power was knocked out to 482,000 customers across southern Louisiana, about 157,000 of them in New Orleans, utility Entergy said.

In Mississippi, the main highway that runs along the Gulf, U.S. 90, was closed in sections by storm surge flooding. At one spot in Biloxi, a foot of water covered the in-town highway for a couple of blocks and it looked like more was coming in. High tide around 9:30 a.m. was likely to bring up more water.

In Pass Christian, a Mississippi coastal community wiped out by hurricanes Camille and Katrina, Mayor Chipper McDermott was optimistic Isaac would not deal a heavy blow.

"It's not too bad, but the whole coast is going to be a mess," he said early Wednesday.

McDermott stood on the porch of the $6 million municipal complex built after Katrina, with walls of 1-foot-thick concrete to withstand hurricane winds. As he looked out toward the Gulf of Mexico, pieces of a structure that had stood atop the city's fishing pier washed across the parking lot.

The state transportation department said Mississippi Highway 43 and Mississippi Highway 604, both in Hancock County, were not passable because of storm surge driven inland.

In largely abandoned Plaquemines Parish, Campbell said an 18-mile stretch along the thinly populated east bank was being overtopped by surge. The levee had not broken.

Campbell said officials believe some people may be trapped in their homes by water from the overtopped levee but were not sure how many might still be in the area. Strong wind was hampering efforts of rescuers to get into parts of the area.

She said officials expected the water to recede to the Gulf as wind direction changes with the storm's movement..

Tens of thousands of people had been told ahead of Isaac to leave low-lying areas of Mississippi and Louisiana, including 700 patients of Louisiana nursing homes. Mississippi shut down the state's 12 shorefront casinos.

The hurricane promised to lend even more solemnity to commemoration ceremonies Wednesday for Katrina's 1,800 dead in Louisiana and Mississippi, including the tolling of the bells at St. Louis Cathedral overlooking New Orleans' Jackson Square.

The storm drew intense scrutiny because of its timing __ coinciding with Katrina and the first major speeches of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., already delayed and tempered by the storm.

Isaac promises to test a New Orleans levee system bolstered by $14 billion in federal repairs and improvements after the catastrophic failures during Katrina. But in a city that has already weathered Hurricane Gustav in 2008, many had faith.

"I feel safe," said Pamela Young, who was riding out the storm in the Lower 9th Ward with her dog Princess in a new, two-story home built to replace the one destroyed by Katrina.

"If the wind isn't too rough, I can stay right here," she said, tapping on her wooden living room coffee table. "If the water comes up, I can go upstairs."

Isaac posed political challenges with echoes of those that followed Katrina, a reminder of how the storm seven years ago became a symbol of government ignorance and ineptitude.

President Barack Obama sought to demonstrate his ability to guide the nation through a natural disaster and Republicans reassured residents they were prepared Tuesday as they formally nominated the former Massachusetts governor as the Republican Party's presidential candidate.

There was already simmering political fallout from the storm. Louisiana's Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal, who canceled his trip to the convention in Tampa, said the Obama administration's disaster declaration fell short of the federal help he had requested. Jindal said he wanted a promise from the federal government to be reimbursed for storm preparation costs.

FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate said such requests would be addressed after the storm.

Obama promised that Americans will help each other recover, "no matter what this storm brings."

"When disaster strikes, we're not Democrats or Republicans first, we are Americans first," Obama said at a campaign rally at Iowa State University. "We're one family. We help our neighbors in need."

Along the Gulf coast east of New Orleans, veterans of past hurricanes made sure to take precautions.

Bonnie Chortler, 54, of Waveland, Miss., lost her home during Hurricane Katrina. After hearing forecasts that Isaac could get stronger and stall, she decided to evacuate to her father's home in Red Level, Ala.

"A slow storm can cause a lot more havoc, a lot more long-term power outage, 'cause it can knock down just virtually everything if it just hovers forever," she said.

Those concerns were reinforced by local officials, who imposed curfews in three Mississippi counties.

"This storm is big and it's tightening up and it sat out there for 12 hours south of us and it's pushing that wave action in and there's nowhere for that water to go until it dissipates," said Harrison County Emergency Operations Director Rupert Lacy.

Independent living is a type of senior care that provides a community of seniors typically over the age of 60. The residents that live at an independent living community are still very active, but don?t want the worry of yard-work,?maintenance?or any of the other responsibilities of owning your own home.?Independent?living, also called retirement living, is a great alternative.

(AP) ? A week before the start of the U.S. Open, Ana Ivanovic couldn't walk without pain in her right foot.

"That's when I started to panic a little bit," she said Thursday.

Two matches into the tournament, the 2008 French Open champion is feeling healthy ? and relaxed.

The 12th-seeded Ivanovic and another Serbian former top-ranked player, Jelena Jankovic, have quietly reached the third round at Flushing Meadows. Each has dropped just nine games through a pair straight-set wins.

Ivanovic beat 51st-ranked Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday.

Asked if the torn tendon is fully healed, Ivanovic laughed and said, "I still have a handful of pills every morning."

But the foot hasn't been hurting since the tournament started, and Ivanovic's draw is looking fairly painless with Caroline Wozniacki and Francesca Schiavone eliminated in her quarter.

But Ivanovic knows that being the favorite guarantees nothing. In 2008, coming off that title at Roland Garros and at No. 1 in the world, she was stunned by 188th-ranked Julie Coin in the second round here, bothered by a thumb injury. The top-seeded woman had never lost that early in the tournament since the Open era began in 1968.

Ivanovic has been trying to regain her health and her confidence ever since. She has yet to make it back to even a quarterfinal of a Grand Slam event.

"I'm really motivated. I want to get back to the top and back in contention to win Grand Slams again," Ivanovic said. "It's been a long process of getting my mind there and my body and game and everything together. Still, it's going to be a lot of hard work and long process, but I'm starting to enjoy it as well.

"I know if it doesn't happen this week, it's coming."

It's a similar story for Jankovic, who defeated 115th-ranked Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino of Spain 6-4, 6-2 on Thursday. Both women reached No. 1 in the world in 2008, a breakthrough year for Serbian tennis when Ivanovic won the French, countryman Novak Djokovic took the Australian Open, and Jankovic reached the final at Flushing Meadows.

While Djokovic has since won four more Grand Slam titles, Jankovic lost in the first round at Wimbledon this year.

She's seeded 30th this week ? though, as she noted with a laugh, her ranking is now up to No. 27.

Jankovic could face second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, one of the top players on the court later Thursday. No. 1 Roger Federer opens the night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium against 83rd-ranked Bjorn Phau. Then sixth-seeded Angelique Kerber takes on seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, the juicy second-round match made possible because the American is unseeded after missing time because of illness.

In other women's second-round action Thursday, 13th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova and No. 14 Maria Kirilenko advanced in straight sets.

Kei Nishikori, seeded 17th on the men's side, eliminated American Tim Smyczek. No. 11-seeded Nicolas Almagro needed five sets and 3 hours, 19 minutes to defeat Philipp Petzschner.

Ottawa Business Coach - Internet Marketing Consulting: Summer, a ...

There are two great times of the year to do planning and the one that is most often overlooked is summer.
In July and August, conduct a review of the first part of the year and set forth a plan for the fall to finish the year with a bang.

Develop a top 10 list of things to accomplish in July and August that will help you through the summer doldrums and accelerate your business through the fall. If you wait till September to start you won?t be ready until Thanksgiving.

Start now with 10 summer business development ideas
1.?Deepen your relationships. Catch up with that client or business associate and ask ?how ya doin?? It will pay off in the fall when you need to leverage the relationship to assist you with your project or new venture.

2.?Build your sales team.?Think about the ideal person to help you with your business and spend the summer interviewing people for the busy fall months. Use the summer to train part-time staff for the fall.

3.?Time-line for your fall marketing strategy.?You can think about things like the dates that you will host your major event or the dates for your press release.

4.?New product launch.?Put the final touches on you new product launch. By September 15th the kids are back in school and most people are back into full business mode and more receptive to your call or product push.

5.?Work on your video strategy.?Plan and shoot the videos you?ll need for your September marketing launch. It?s perfect weather to capture the video (or line up the testimonies) that will enable you to recruit new clients to your business.

6.?Clean up your database. Whether you?re using Outlook, Act or any number of contact management software, review that pile of business cards you?ve collected and add them to your data base and then import them to your newsletter database.

7.?Update your website.?This is something we have done for the last 5 years in a row. In fact the new Floodlight site will be launched shortly. A new or updated website will ensure that all of your information is current.

8.?Create your blog.?It always amazes me how many people have not added this simple technique to their marketing arsenal. A blog enables you to speak directly to all of your clients past, present and future, providing them with relevant information and ideas.

9.?Develop your Social Media strategy. The big 3, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. Learn to use these tools and add their Icons to your website which will encourage your followers to share your content with their personal networks

10.?Plan some Rest and Relaxation. We get so wrapped up in the daily running of our business that we often forget to take time off for ourselves to recharge our batteries.

Summer means renewing old friendships, meeting with long time business associates, taking care of you and preparing to Build Your Business in the fall.

Kacsmar: Green Bay's offense doesn't need Benson

Adding a 1,000-yard rusher who can't catch and lacks speed hardly helps Packers

Image: Cedric BensonGetty Images

Cedric Benson is a 1,000-yard rusher, but that doesn't mean he'll add punch to the Green Bay offense.

By Scott Kacsmar

NBCSports.com

updated 3:07 a.m. ET Aug. 28, 2012

Think back to two moments from the 2005 NFL Draft: Cedric Benson?s tearful outburst when he was chosen No. 4 pick overall by the Chicago Bears, and Aaron Rodgers sitting in the green room for hours, waiting to hear his name called.

Rodgers did not cry, or at least ESPN did not capture any tears in what had to be a difficult moment. But good things come to those who wait, and Green Bay selecting Rodgers 24th overall was a blessing in disguise.

Seven years later, Rodgers and Benson unite for what will likely be the starting backfield in Green Bay?s offense.

Their first game together last Thursday night in Cincinnati was successful, with Benson carrying the ball six times for 38 yards. However, the Packers? leading rusher was actually Rodgers with six carries for 52 yards and a pair of touchdowns on scrambles.

When Rodgers recently said the Packers need to show they can run the ball, it is unlikely he had himself in mind. His stance has taken on a much different tone from July when he replied ?Do we need to?? when asked about being able to run the ball.

His initial response was the right one. After one of the most prolific offensive seasons in NFL history, why would you start delegating to a player with a checkered past like Benson? Coach Mike McCarthy has history and great results on his side to avoid just that.

Green Bay?s unique QB-driven offense
Quarterbacks want the ball in their hands, and McCarthy puts the ball in Rodgers? hands often.

Rodgers averages 39.4 drop backs per start (passes, sacks and runs), which is the second highest average in NFL history (min. 60 starts). As shown in Table 1, only Daunte Culpepper has averaged more.

Highest average of drop backs per start

Rank Quarterback Games started Drop backs
1 Daunte Culpepper 100 39.6
2 Aaron Rodgers 62 39.4
3 Donovan McNabb 161 39.3
4 Aaron Brooks 90 39.1
5 Drew Bledsoe 193 39.1
6 Randall Cunningham 135 39.0
7 Jon Kitna 124 38.9
8 Drew Brees 153 38.8
9 Warren Moon 203 38.2
10 Kurt Warner 116 37.7

Brett Favre averaged 38.6 drop backs per start in two seasons under McCarthy (2006-07). Running this type of offense in Vince Lombardi's era would have been blasphemy, but football has evolved dramatically.

Packers don?t need no stinkin? run game
The Packers' rushing issues the last four season aren't a secret. But does this matter in today?s NFL?

If you have an elite quarterback, you can consistently win without a running game. Whether it?s rushing for under 100 yards or not exceeding 30 carries, the teams with the very best quarterbacks are the ones that still win those types of games.

Of course, what separates Rodgers from the other elite quarterbacks is the way he takes matters into his own hands in the running game, scrambling for yards to inflate his team?s rushing statistics. That is why it?s good to remove quarterback carries from a team?s rushing stats to get a better sense of their intended ground game (handoffs only).

When you remove Rodgers from the stats, the results of Green Bay?s rushing offense are not pretty. In his 68 career starts (including playoffs), the Packers only average 21.9 carries for 88.2 yards (4.02 yards per carry). In spite of the running game, their record is 45-23 (.662).

In fact, no matter what Green Bay does on the ground, Rodgers usually plays at a high level, as seen in Table 2.

Rodgers' passing stats vs. rushing production

Rush yards Record Att. Comp. Pct. Yds. YPA TD INT Rating
125+ 8-2 311 198 63.7 2,562 8.24 19 6 101.8
100-124 9-3 375 259 69.1 3,245 8.65 26 5 113.3
75-99 14-3 603 411 68.2 5,143 8.53 52 9 111.4
60-74 9-8 554 349 63.0 4,461 8.05 36 14 99.3
<60 5-7 431 273 63.3 3,407 7.90 23 7 98.8

When Green Bay rushed for a season-high 138 yards against Oakland last year, it was the first game all season where Rodgers did not have a passer rating over 100.0. It was also the first time he did not complete at least 60 percent of his passes. Rodgers was 17 of 30 (56.7 percent) with a 96.7 passer rating.

So much for the ?running game opening up the passing game? theory.

If the Packers fail to even average 3.0 YPC (13 games), Rodgers still has a 103.6 passer rating. When they average over 5.0 YPC (11 games), which is supposed to signify great rushing, Rodgers has a 100.8 passer rating.

See the big picture? No matter what Green Bay does on the ground, the Packers win and lose depending on Rodgers and the defense. His passing performances are still usually great and independent of their rushing ability.

Initial evidence points to the running game and passing game being independent of each other. If an offense wants to be one-dimensional, it can be successful as long as they have the right talent and mindset for it like Green Bay.

Why do you think many of the best running backs ? such as Adrian Peterson, Maurice Jones-Drew, and Chris Johnson ? have been on some of the worst offenses in the league in recent years?

Likewise, we keep seeing teams excel in the passing game without any real threat of the run, such as the Super Bowl champion New York Giants. The Packers have been doing it for years under McCarthy.

What Does "Overqualified" Actually Mean? [Jobs]

What Does "Overqualified" Actually Mean?Of course rejection hurts, but to tell your friends and family (and yourself) that you were turned down because you were too skilled or too experienced is much less bruising on the ego than the alternative. For companies looking to eliminate candidates, using the word "overqualified" may take some of the sting and fear of retribution out of the rejection. But is it true?

Think about this scenario for a second. You are trying to hire a new employee and you estimate that someone with five years of experience should be able to handle the duties effectively. A candidate is presented with fifteen years of experience that has all the attributes you are seeking. This person should theoretically perform the tasks quicker and even take on some additional workload. Do you really think a company would not hire this person simply because he/she has those additional years of experience? I would argue that is rarely the case.

What can overqualified actually mean?

Overpaid

If your experience is greater than what is required, it generally becomes a problem when your salary requirements are above what is budgeted. It's not that you are classified as overpaid in your current role, but that you would be overpaid for the level of responsibility at the new job. I list this as the most likely culprit because I often see companies initially reject a candidate as overqualified, then hire that same person because of a lack of less experienced quality talent.

Stagnant

Candidates who have worked for many years in a technically stagnant and regulated environment will often not thrive in less regulated, more technically diverse firms. The conventional wisdom, right or wrong, is that you can't release the zoo lions back into the jungle once they've been tamed.

Overskilled

If your skills are greater than what is necessary for the job, an employer may fear that the lack of challenges provided will bore you into looking for more interesting work in the future. Hiring a tech lead to do bug fixes could lead to a short stint. There is emerging evidence that shows skilled workers do not exit less challenging jobs quickly or in high numbers, but hiring managers are not quite ready to abandon the traditional line of thinking.

Threatening

If your experience is greater than those conducting the interviews, there could be some fear that you could be a competitor for future opportunities for promotion. If a start-up is yet to hire a CTO, the highest geek on that firm's food chain may be jockeying for the role. This may sound a bit like a paranoid conspiracy theory, but I genuinely believe it is prevalent enough to mention.

Age

Ageism is a real problem, but in my experience, ageism is also widely overdiagnosed by candidates who think the problem is their age when in actuality it is their work history. Most of the self-diagnosed claims of ageism that I hear are from candidates who spent perhaps 20+ years working for the same company and have not focused on keeping their skills up to date (see stagnant above). I can't say that I've ever heard a claim of ageism from a candidate that has moved around in their career and stayed current with technology. The problem often isn't age, it is relevance.

So if you are an active job seeker that is continuously hearing that you are overqualified, what can you do to improve your standing?

1. Rethink: Try to investigate which of the meanings of overqualified you are hearing most often. Is your compensation in line with what companies are paying for your set of qualifications? Do you present yourself in interviews as someone who may become easily bored when your work is less challenging? Are you making it clear in interviews that you want the job, and you explain why you want the job?

2. Retool: Make sure your skills are relevant and being sought by companies. Invest time to learn an emerging technology or developing some niche specialty that isn't already flooded.

3. Remarket: Write down the top reasons you think a company should hire you, and then check to see if those reasons are represented in your job search materials (resume, email application, cover letters). Find out what was effective for your peers in their job search and try to implement new self-promotion tactics.

4. Reboot and refresh: Take a new look at your options beyond the traditional career paths. Have you considered consulting or contracting roles where your guidance and mentoring skills could be justified and valued for temporary periods? Are there emerging markets that interest you?

Terms like ?overqualified' and ?not a fit' are unfortunately the laziest, easiest, and safest ways that companies can reject you for a position, and they almost always mean something else. Discovering the real reason you were passed up is necessary to make the proper adjustments so you can get less rejections and more offers.
