Verizon FiOS Will Debut a 300 Mbps Internet Tier Next Month ...

Who wants a 300 Mbps download speed in their home? Pretty much everyone. Who?s getting it? Verizon FiOS customers, that?s who.

Verizon FiOS announced today that beginning next month it will be introducing some new service tears to its portfolio. ?Here is a breakdown of all of them compared to the current offerings:

Speed Fact Sheet Verizon FiOS InternetNo word as of yet on the pricing for these new tiers, but all of them look like pretty healthy offerings. ?Verizon also offered up some suggestions on what type of consumer each tier is targeted at.

I?m with a different ISP, and while I enjoy my 50 Mbps down is plenty for me, I only get 2 Mbps on the upload. I would kill for any of these.

Verizon Ushers in New Era of Consumer Broadband; New FiOS Portfolio Features Speeds of 75, 150 and 300 Mbps

Higher Speeds Cater to Rapid Growth in Video Streaming and Multiple Internet-Connected Devices in Homes

NEW YORK ? May?30,?2012 ?

Responding to consumer demand for ultra-high-speed home broadband service, Verizon next month will more than double the speeds of several of its?FiOS Internet?tiers ? and introduce two new tiers with even faster speeds.

The new?FiOS Internet portfolio?will feature download/upload speed tiers of 50/25 and 150/65 megabits per second (Mbps), as well as two new tiers of 75/35 and 300/65 Mbps.? The latter speed is double that of FiOS Internet?s current top speed of 150/35 Mbps, the nation?s fastest, mass scale residential Internet speed.

In addition, Verizon will continue to offer its entry-level speed of 15/5 Mbps.? The other speeds in the company?s current industry-leading FiOS Internet portfolio are 25/25, 35/35 50/20 and 150/35 Mbps.??(A FiOS Internet speed grid with more details about the current and future FiOS speeds is available by clicking?here.)??Pricing for the new portfolio will be announced next month.

The new speeds, to be offered in stand-alone and bundled packages, are designed to address the burgeoning growth of bandwidth-intensive applications and the increase in the number of Internet-connected devices being used simultaneously in the same household.? The speeds will also support consumers who are watching more over-the-top video programming on TVs and portable devices, and accommodate the rise in Internet-enabled applications like video and audio streaming,?home monitoring devices, video chat, multiplayer gaming and online backup services, all of which? can simultaneously sap the strength of many home broadband connections.

Bob Mudge, president of Verizon?s consumer and mass market business unit, characterized the broadband speed increases as a ?societal and technological necessity,? as secure network applications enable consumers to enjoy a ?borderless lifestyle? in which they can connect to the content they care about, anytime and anywhere.

?The ways we used the Internet and watched TV over the past 10 to 15 years have dramatically shifted,? said Mudge. ?With the emergence of smartphones, smart TVs, Blu-ray players, tablets and gaming consoles that also serve as over-the-top devices, consumers need more bandwidth to receive the highest-quality experience.?

The higher downstream and upstream FiOS tiers that Verizon will deliver will provide customers with sustained speed and reliability of service, in contrast to intermittent speed boosts offered by cable-company competitors whose networks, unlike Verizon?s, are not all-fiber optic.

How FiOS Internet Speeds Meet Individual Needs of Consumers

Consumers will be able to choose from the new range of FiOS speed options to maximize their broadband or video experience.? For example, the 15/5 Mbps tier is best used for basic tasks such as email and Web browsing in a household of one or two Internet-connected users with several devices.? In contrast, the 50/25 Mbps tier can best serve a multiple-device household with three or more users who frequently telecommute, enjoy downloading music and photos, and viewing videos on PCs or wireless devices.

The new 75/35 Mbps tier best serves a household that?streams HD movies to the TV, downloads or uploads video files, participates in multiplayer gaming, and has three or more Internet-connected users on multiple devices.

The most powerful 150/65 and 300/65 Mbps speed tiers are designed for households of five or more Internet-connected users who want to receive the best standard- and high-definition video streaming experience on a variety of devices.

Why Video Web Traffic Is Fueling the Need for Faster Bandwidth

?Our top FiOS speed will be twice as fast as anything America has ever seen,? said Mike Ritter, chief marketing officer for Verizon?s consumer and mass market business unit. ?High-speed Internet no longer is just for techies, as more than half of our residential consumers already use at least a 20 Mbps Internet connection.? Streaming online video on an all-fiber-optic connection providing faster speeds is better and more reliable during peak Internet usage hours.

?As recently as 2005, video was less than 10 percent of Web traffic,? said Ritter. ?By the end of this year, we expect it to be 50 percent, growing to 90 percent in just a few years.?

Today, the average home has seven Internet-connected devices.? With the continuing increase of devices in the home using a wired or Wi-Fi Internet connection, the average home by 2015 will have between nine and 15 Internet-connected devices, said Ritter.

The majority of Verizon customers will be able to order the two fastest-speed options of 150 and 300 Mbps, which require customers to be connected via a GPON (gigabit passive optical network) terminal.? For existing customers who have a BPON (broadband passive optical network) terminal and qualify for the GPON service, the installation of a new GPON terminal will be required.

With a 300 Mbps speed, consumers can download a two-hour, standard-definition movie (1.5 gigabytes) in less than 40 seconds; and a two-hour, high-definition movie (5 GB) in 2.2 minutes.? On a 150 Mbps connection, the same two-hour, SD movie can be downloaded in less than 80 seconds, and the two-hour, HD movie in less than four-and-a-half minutes.

Downloading 20 high-resolution photographs (100 megabytes) would take 2.8 seconds with a 300/65 Mbps connection and 5.4 seconds using the 150/65 Mbps service.? With the 65 Mbps upstream speed, consumers can upload 200 high-resolution photos or five minutes of HD video in 31 seconds, and in 58 seconds with the 35 Mbps upstream service.

More than 13.7 million customers in parts of nine Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states plus parts of Florida, Texas, California and the District of Columbia can order FiOS Internet. The total will grow to 18 million as Verizon continues to deploy its all-fiber-optic network to serve more consumers and small businesses.

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE, Nasdaq: VZ), headquartered in New York, is a global leader in delivering broadband and other wireless and wireline communications services to consumer, business, government and wholesale customers.? Verizon Wireless operates America?s most reliable wireless network, with 93 million retail customers nationwide.? Verizon also provides converged communications, information and entertainment services over America?s most advanced fiber-optic network, and delivers integrated business solutions to customers in more than 150 countries, including all of the Fortune 500.? A Dow 30 company with $111 billion in 2011 revenues, Verizon employs a diverse workforce of nearly 192,000.? For more information, visit?www.verizon.com.

HP Wireless Audio

Wireless and networked audio is becoming increasingly ubiquitous. Bluetooth and AirPlay allow you to play music on their smartphones, tablets, and computers through their speaker systems, and DLNA lets you play music that's stored on their computers through their Blu-ray players and HDTVs over their home network. There aren't many simple, out-of-the-box kits to enable wireless audio on both ends, though. The HP Wireless Audio kit changes that, by offering an all-in-one solution to stream music from your computer to your speakers. It's easy to set up, but at $99.99 (direct), it's expensive for a device that lets you do things you probably can already do via other methods.

The HP Wireless Audio kit has two parts: a transmitter and a receiver box. The transmitter is a basic USB device shaped like a large, wide flash drive. It's slightly wider than would be convenient, as it can block other ports close to the USB port it's plugged into. The receiver box is a 1.2- by 4.5- by 2.9-inch (HWD) rectangular device with a port for the power cable, RCA stereo outputs, a standard-size 3.5mm output, and an S/PDIF digital output. It also has a small pairing button and two lights to show it's plugged in and paired with the transmitter.

To sync the transmitter with the receiver, you need to install the HP Wireless Audio Manager software on your PC and plug in the transmitter. Once you install it, you can pair your computer (with the transmitter attached) to the receiver by pressing the pairing button on the receiver and running the software. The default audio driver will switch to the USB transmitter. From that point, anything you play on the computer will output through the receiver to whatever speakers or home theater system you hook up.

Despite the claims of the HP Wireless Audio product page on HP's web site, the audio driver only supports stereo sound, so you can't take full advantage of a surround sound system. In other words, it only sends two channels of audio to your speakers or receiver, meaning you can't use it to link your PC to your 5.1-channel system to make games like Bioshock more atmospheric.

HP claims the wireless audio device has a range of 100 feet, but I didn't see that in my tests. While it streamed audio flawlessly to a receiver placed 15 feet away, it couldn't keep a reliable connection to an HDTV across the Lab. Mixmaster Mike sounded clean through our test surround system near my desk, but the rest of the Beastie Boys popped and crackled and occasionally cut out through the screen 80 feet away. In fairness, the PCMag.com Labs have more wireless interference than most homes, but you should still be wary if you want to use the HP Wireless Audio across your house. Despite the reception issue, there didn't seem to be any noticeable latency between the computer and the receiver. If the signal stays strong, you won't have to wait between clicking play and hearing the music on your speakers.

HP Wireless Audio easily lets you connect your PC to your speaker system, but there are easier and better ways to do it. For example, if you have a big home theater system, it may already support AirPlay for Apple product users, and it almost certainly supports DLNA for accessing music shared on a network. If you have a recent Blu-ray player or HDTV, you can access your music through your home network. If you don't, you can get a good Blu-ray player for less than $150 like the Editors' Choice LG BP620 ($129.99, 4 stars) and add DLNA support and many other entertainment features to your sound system. If you don't have a full sound system but still want wireless music, the Editors' Choice Logitech Mini Boombox ($99.99, 4 stars) offers a self-contained Bluetooth speaker and speakerphone that will work with your computer and mobile devices for the same price as the HP Wireless Audio kit.

(BPS) Bharat Punargathan Sangathan .com ? A fresh look at Ibiza

Ibiza has lengthy been a single of the world?s premier summer-sun holiday destinations, even though in recent years several guests (which includes myself) happen to be put off by the seedy Ibiza uncovered design publicity the island has received. Thankfully, the White Island is now moving away from this tacky lads-on-holiday image, and is once yet again attracting a more up-market fashion of tourism.

That is hardly surprising if you take a second to take into consideration what Ibiza can offer you to the discerning visitor, with wonderful white beaches adored by the wealthy and well-known for decades, unspoilt pine forests, white-washed villages, an entire selection of restaurants offering the top of world cuisine, world-famous nightlife and some with the friendliest locals you will ever meet.

Ibiza is once more becoming ?the place to become witnessed, so for those right after a piece with the limelight, strut your stuff via the outdated Ibiza institution Pacha, or have an extended lunch on the beach at the Jockey Club, and you are assured to be rubbing shoulders with the wealthy and well-known.

Should you be looking to get a soothing week away from it all, take my tips and go in early May; the weather is best, as well as the island is all but deserted when compared with the madness of August. You will get lovely beaches all to yourselves, and excellent service whatsoever the restaurants.

The level of service has enhanced greatly at the same time, with activities like water sports, hot air ballooning, mountain-biking, boat rental and yoga easy to discover and well-priced. For the full rock-star service, I?d recommend hiring a villa full with chef, maid and chauffeur; some villa rental agents are even offering a concierge service by way of which you can book tables at exclusive restaurants, get VIP tickets to the very best clubs or arrange other companies for example masseurs inside your villa.

If you are organizing your summer time holidays, believe twice just before rejecting the thought of Ibiza as your chosen destinationI believe you will find yourselves as pleasantly amazed as I was.

Apple must open up its 'crystal prison': report

4 hrs.

As the devices we use become more powerful, companies like Apple and Microsoft are exerting more control over how we use them. There is an increasing backlash against restrictions placed on how we can use our PCs and mobile phones, and the cause is being taken up by pundits of ever higher visibility. Recently?Steve Wozniak, one of Apple's founding members, called for the company to open up its software ecosystem, and the?Electronic Frontier Foundation, a free speech and?consumer and?advocacy organization, has echoed that sentiment with an article that calls Apple's devices and operating systems a "crystal prison."

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBCUniversal.)

For many users, the walls of this prison never seem to close in. There are thousands upon thousands of apps and games, useful features, and frequent updates from Apple. But for a growing minority (something which has a habit of eventually becoming a majority), the restrictions are worrying.

The EFF describes many of these deliberate limitations in detail, but here are some of the headline complaints ? not limited to Apple:

  • Apple's iOS disallows the installation of applications from anywhere but the official store, and the upcoming version of OS X discourages it strongly.
  • Every app in must be individually approved by Apple, sometimes with seemingly arbitrary conditions.
  • Users are unable to personalize the look and feel of their iPhone or iPad, and cannot improve or modify security settings like firewalls, VPNs or multiple users.
  • People who have installed custom software on their iPhones are no longer covered under warranty for hardware defects and things like cracked screens.
  • Microsoft is restricting some manufacturers from allowing the installation of any operating system but Windows 8 on certain hardware.
  • Carriers like AT&T insist on locking down phones with custom software (including invasive items like Carrier IQ) and "bloatware" apps that can't be removed.

These practices are good for the companies' bottom line, but they also erode trust and prevent some users from doing what they want to do with the devices they own.?

The EFF suggests that Apple, being the pioneer in this area of walled gardens and crystal prisons, should be the one to lead people out. Android has shown that a platform can be open to tinkering while still being fairly secure and liked by casual users, and?Apple has the clout and industry cred to help set a new standard.

Today, things like alternate OSes and third-party apps are only a matter of concern to power users and hackers. But as more people come to rely on these devices for a growing?variety of purposes, from music and movies to video calls and professional functions, these restrictions will become more and more visible.

Auto Loans after Bankruptcy - Should You Finance a New or Used ...

Deciding whether to purchase a new or used car is a big decision,?especially if you have just filed a recent bankruptcy. Of course, the?decision is largely based on how bad you need a vehicle. There are valid?reasons for financing a new or used car after bankruptcy. On the other?hand, there are also numerous reasons to delay the car buying process.?Before applying for an auto loan, carefully consider whether now?s the?right time to finance.

When Was the Bankruptcy Discharged?

Once your bankruptcy has been discharged, you are free to finance an ?auto loan, mortgage, or acquire a credit card. However, you will incur huge finance fees or interest. For the most part, financial experts recommend waiting at least six months to a year before financing a large expense.

The interest rate you receive on an auto loan immediately following a bankruptcy will be approximately three percentage points higher than the average loan. This will significantly increase your monthly car payment. To avoid high fees, wait until your credit improves.

Have You Established New Credit Accounts?

After a bankruptcy, it is vital to establish new credit accounts. Bankruptcy gives you the opportunity for a fresh start. Thus, you should apply for new credit cards, department store charges, gas cards, etc. The only way to improve your credit score after bankruptcy is to open new accounts and maintain regular payments. In time, your score will rise, which justifies a better rate on your auto loan.

Choosing an Auto Loan Lender for New or Used Car

If you decide to purchase a new vehicle, the next step involves selecting the right lender. There are quite a few options available. You can obtain financing through a new or used car dealership, or you can secure your own financing. If possible, compare rates from at least three to four money sources. Contact your bank or credit union and inquire of their rates. Notify the lender of your current credit status.

In most cases, you will have to secure financing through a sub prime lender. Some traditional auto loan lenders may offer these types of loans. Another option involves taking advantage of online auto loan brokers.

Brokers will thoroughly assess your credit application, and match you with various lenders. Next, the broker will email you quotes from these lenders. You pick the most desirable loan package.

Controversial O.C. politician loses local GOP leadership post

PaulyDeborah Pauly, the outspoken Villa Park councilwoman who drew community ire when she protested outside an Islamic charity event, was removed this week from a leadership position with the Orange County Republican Party's central committee.

Party officials said Pauly, who is running for county supervisor, has been a divisive figure.

Her removal comes days after Orange businessman Bob Walters mailed letters on Pauly's behalf to voters on "George Wallace for President"? letterhead. The stationery appears to have been left over from Walters' stint as chairman? of Wallace's failed campaign for president in 1967.

The mailer urged citizens to vote for Pauly, who is in a heated race for a supervisor?s seat, and was the subject of a complaint to the state's Fair Political Practices Commission.

Pauly previously told the L.A. Times that she did not know of Walters? ties to the former governor, who was associated with segregation during his years in power.

The Villa Park councilwoman sparked outrage last year when she appeared outside a charity function. "I know quite a few Marines who will be very happy to help these terrorists to an early meeting in paradise," Pauly said at the time.

In 2010, Pauly was taken to task after writing on her Facebook page that applauding President Obama?s healthcare bill was ?like applauding a mugging or a rape.?

On Monday, Pauly was removed as first vice chair of the county's Republican Party on a motion by Scott Baugh, the chairman of the GOP.

Baugh said that Pauly is a divisive force in the party at a time when unity is needed. ?These are not just my opinions, they?ve been brought to me by dozens and dozens of people who share my concerns,? he said at the meeting.

?She makes statements out there that I?m constantly having to defend,? he said.

Pauly did not return a request for comment. Neither did Baugh.

At the meeting, which was videotaped, Pauly said that she is being criticized because she is not an ?establishment status-quo Republican.?

She blamed Baugh for attempting to taint her supervisorial campaign against Todd Spitzer, a former state assemblyman and supervisor.? ?You are being used as political pawns in a game,? she told committee members.

Emily Sanford, a longtime member of the party, said in a letter to the committee that over the years she has seen many officers come and go, but Pauly?s behavior stands out.

Pauly, Sanford wrote, seems to ?enjoy being unnecessarily provocative."

She said that Pauly's statements only make the Republican Party appear "insensitive."

A small group of protesters, including Donald Craig, the president of the Orange County chapter of the NAACP, spoke about the Wallace letterhead mailer at a Villa Park council meeting Tuesday night before being cut off by the city attorney.

Craig said Wednesday that Pauly has not done anything to separate herself from the Wallace flier.

?It hit a nerve with us,? he said. ?You can?t be in the middle with something like this.?

Islamist and ex-PM vie for mantle of Egypt's revolt

CAIRO (Reuters) - The Muslim Brotherhood and a military man identified with the police state of the ousted Hosni Mubarak courted defeated first-round candidates in Egypt's presidential election on Saturday, each trying to claim the mantle of the revolution for a runoff next month.

State media named the Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi and former air force chief Ahmed Shafiq as the top two vote-getters in this week's first round of a close-fought election made possible by last year's popular revolt.

Official results are not due until Tuesday to allow the election committee to hear complaints and appeals about the voting. State newspapers cited no source for their vote count, which broadly tallied with previous Brotherhood estimates.

The choice between Mursi and Shafiq, representing forces that have tussled for the past six decades, has dismayed many Egyptians who voted for candidates offering a middle ground.

They fear a victory for the 70-year-old Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister, would snuff out hopes of change ignited by the anti-Mubarak uprising, while a win for Mursi would pitch Egypt into an experiment with Islamic rule.

The Brotherhood invited rivals, including losing candidates such as leftist Hamdeen Sabahy and moderate Islamist Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, to talks on Saturday aimed at gaining their support for the runoff against Shafiq on June 16 and 17.

Warning of "determined efforts to recreate the old regime", it said parties that supported the uprising against Mubarak must unite "so that the revolution is not stolen from us".

The Brotherhood already holds the biggest bloc in parliament after an election completed in January, but has been unable to assert itself against an army-appointed interim government.

WHO STOLE THE REVOLUTION?

Shafiq used strikingly similar language at a news conference as he addressed youth groups that spearheaded last year's popular uprising.

"Your revolution was stolen," he told them. "I pledge to return its fruits to your hands."

Shafiq said that "the clock cannot be turned back", but that he would not let the country "drown in chaos".

Much of his rhetoric indirectly targeted the Brotherhood, playing on fears among Egypt's minority Christians and secular liberals that a Mursi presidency would threaten their freedoms.

"No exclusion of anyone or distancing of anyone," he declared. "Everyone has a right to be a part of this nation."

On Friday he had told Egyptian television that he saw no problem with the idea of a Muslim Brotherhood-led government if he were elected president.

The generals who took over when Mubarak quit on February 11, 2011, have promised to make way for a new president by July 1, formally ending a messy and often bloody political transition.

But the military, which has supplied all Egypt's previous presidents, is keen to keep its privileges and influence in a new order in which the powers of the president, parliament and government are as yet undefined by a rewritten constitution.

Mursi and Shafiq only narrowly topped the vote on Wednesday and Thursday, in which unofficial results showed less than 8 percentage points separating the top four candidates.

Mursi's 25 percent paled in comparison to the parliamentary election, in which the Brotherhood gained nearly half the seats.

Reform-minded independents such as Abol Fotouh and Sabahy between them won more votes than either Shafiq or Mursi, hinting at the growth of a new centre in Egypt's fluid political scene.

"The Brotherhood will have to reach out in a grand and dramatic way to the centre and the other political parties if they have any hope of winning their support and any hope of winning the presidency," said Elijah Zarwan of the European Council on Foreign Relations think tank.

ANTI-SHAFIQ FRONT?

A Brotherhood party official, Yasser Ali, said the talks to persuade rivals to join an anti-Shafiq front would discuss the vice presidency and a new coalition government.

"We know we will succeed in uniting behind the initiative to save the nation and complete the revolution," Essam el-Erian, deputy head of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, told a news conference on Friday.

Long a thorn in Mubarak's flesh, the Brotherhood has looked increasingly isolated from other parties since his fall, first facing accusations it was slow to join the revolt and then that it acquiesced in the military rule that followed.

Trust in the Brotherhood was further undermined when the group decided to join the presidential race, after previously pledging to stay out. The group, founded in 1928, says it is the target of a vicious smear campaign by its opponents.

Abol Fotouh, who won about 17.6 percent of the vote by the Brotherhood's count, has said he will now back the Islamist group with which he split last year to run for president.

He did not name the Brotherhood, but said he and his supporters would "rise above our political and party differences" and would "stand in a united front against the symbols of corruption and oppression".

Shafiq has won support among Egyptians who see him as the kind of strongman the country needs to end 15 months of political instability, economic failure and rising crime.

His constituency also includes Christians, who form about a 10th of Egypt's 82 million people. They complained of discrimination in Mubarak's day, but are likely to vote for Shafiq in preference to an Islamist.

Mohamed Habib, a former deputy leader of the Brotherhood who left the group last year in protest at its post-uprising policies, said the group should offer vice presidential positions to at least two people from outside the group.

He suggested one could be a Christian - an idea to which Mursi himself has said he is not opposed.

CIA remembers those lost in covert operations

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The CIA is remembering those lost in the hidden, often dangerous world of espionage, adding a new star to the intelligence agency's memorial wall and more than a dozen names to its hallowed Book of Honor.

The new star carved into the wall is for Jeffrey Patneau, a young officer killed in a car crash in Yemen in September 2008.

"Jeff proved that he had boundless talent, courage and innovativeness to offer to our country in its fight against terrorism," said CIA Director David Petraeus at a private ceremony at CIA headquarters this past week.

Petraeus' tribute was the first public identification of Patneau. The stars on the memorial wall at headquarters in Langley, Va., bear no names.

Yemen, the ancestral homeland of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, was the site of the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, which killed 17 American sailors. Patneau was part of the fight against militants in the country in a tense year in which the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa was attacked.

With the addition of the star for Patneau, the wall now commemorates the lives of 103 Americans who died in service of the CIA, "never for acclaim, always for country," Petraeus said at the annual event attended by hundreds of employees and family members of those lost. The rememberance came just days ahead of Memorial Day, when the nation remembers its military veterans and those who died in war.

The addition of 15 names to the CIA's Book of Honor means family members can openly acknowledge where their loved ones worked when they died.

Leslianne Shedd was lost when hijackers forced down her plane over the Indian Ocean, killing more than 125 people.

"Everybody who was on the plane with her who survived said she was not at all scared," her sister, Corinne Collie, told The Associated Press on Saturday. "She was saying it's all going to be okay, holding the hand of the person sitting next to her."

Collie says the agency approached her family a year ago, saying it was now possible to acknowledge her death ? likely meaning the cases she had worked on had been wrapped up, or staff she worked with had either retired or were no longer in harm's way. Collie said being able to share what her sister did has been a relief.

"To lose a sister and not be able to talk about the full picture of who she was has been hard," said Collie of Tacoma, Wash.

"The biggest relief is my parents ... get to acknowledge and brag about her, especially my dad," she said.

Like Shedd, most of those honored were killed in the clandestine war on terrorism, the list reading like a grim roll call of terrorist acts of the last three decades. Matthew Gannon was among the victims of the December 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Molly Hardy was killed in the August 1998 suicide bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. She urged others to take cover as she was hit by the blast from an al-Qaida car bomb.

Jacqueline Van Landingham was killed in a terrorist attack in Pakistan in 1995. The CIA did not disclose how she died.

CIA officers face constant threat in Pakistan, hunting and hunted by the Taliban and al-Qaida. They often play a cat-and-mouse game with Pakistan's intelligence service, sometimes able to work with them and sometimes forced to work around them to gather intelligence on al-Qaida's militant diaspora. U.S. officials say it gets support from elements of the Pakistani government.

Five of those remembered were victims of the April 1983 suicide bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut that killed 63 people.

Among the CIA officers lost was Phyliss Nancy Faraci, "one of the last four Americans evacuated from the Mekong Delta when Saigon fell" during the Vietnam War, according to CIA spokesman Todd Ebitz. Faraci had volunteered to work in war-torn Beirut.

Deborah Hixon, a young officer fluent in French who volunteered for a temporary posting there, also died in the attack. Frank Johnston was a 25-year agency veteran who had accepted the assignment though he was close to retirement.

Paramilitary officer James Lewis, who had joined the CIA after his military career, and his wife, Monique Lewis, also were killed. Lewis was "only hours into her first day as an Agency officer when the bomber struck," Ebitz said.

96% The Kid with a Bike

All Critics (106) | Top Critics (26) | Fresh (102) | Rotten (4)

The film should be required viewing for everyone who has lost faith in the power of random acts of kindness.

"The Kid With a Bike" vibrates with desperation, frustration and the simple unfairness of life, leavened with glimpses of hope.

Cyril is one of the most inspiringly resilient, self-aware young characters to arrive on-screen in recent memory...

"The Kid With A Bike'' is, remarkably, about hope - about the connections people forge when the ones they've been given desert them.

The Dardennes' quiet, naturalistic style strips this story of melodrama but not of emotion.

Without diminishing the boy's intensity or making him in any way ingratiating, the Dardennes take us into his mind, and we begin to appreciate not only his predicament but his resiliency.

A frank, no-nonsense drama filled with compassion for a lost soul kid abandoned by his father.

...a deeply humane movie that deserves to be compared with one of its obvious inspirations, Vittorio De Sica's neo-realist classic Bicycle Thieves

A moving, sweet and at times harrowing tale...

De France does a terrific job of balancing maternal instinct with matter-of-factness, in a performance that is more human than tender - and all the more powerful for it.

Unlike many films, it genuinely earns every feeling it evokes.

a complex interweaving of bitter reality and a deeply humane worldview that sees the possibility of redemption in even the cruelest of circumstances

A beautiful and stirring story of unconditional compassion, of emotional honesty, and -- above all -- of hope.

The Dardennes' style resists cheap sentimentality, yet in The Kid with a Bike it yields a deeply moving examination of love as a shield.

Dardenne brothers set an orphan in search of a father

Will bad breaks break a boy?

How the Dardennes, time and again, turn gritty, mundane subjects into transcendent moments of honesty and truth is one of the great cinematic wonders.

This is a film that's not always easy to watch, but just about impossible to forget.

It is crystal clear on at least one point: People are mysterious and beautiful, and they need each other.

Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne offer another in their remarkable succession of contemporary neo-realist dramas in this quietly devastating but gently hopeful [film].

[It] gives obvious homage to a variety of films. ... But one inspiration shines throughout the movie ... The Red Balloon.

...the film delivers a final act as riveting as it is artistically satisfying. Not many films can claim a perfect ending. This one can.

...manages to balance a spiritual sense of grace with the earthy eye of a here-and-now realist.
