Sony releases ICS beta ROM for Xperia Play, invites advanced devs to test games

Sony's been more transparent than most manufacturers in the way it's handled its Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates. It released a couple of early ICS builds for various 2011 Xperia phones over the past few months, and now the manufacturer has a fresh beta ROM prepared for yet another device -- the GSM Xperia Play. As Sony prepares to roll out the Play's ICS update, it wants advanced users to see how the phone's library of games holds up on the new version of Google's OS.

To get an early look at Ice Cream Sandwich on your Xperia Play, you'll need an unlocked device on the latest firmware, as well as an unlocked bootloader (check Sony Mobile's bootloader site). You'll then need to flash the new ROM onto your device using some command-line wizardry. After you're done, Sony wants to know what you think, and it's set up a thread over on the XDA forums to collect feedback from testers.

A word of warning, though -- Wifi connectivity is apparently not functional in this beta, and there are no Google apps included either, apparently due to licensing issues. The latter can be solved by finding, downloading and flashing the apps yourself, but the lack of Wifi will probably be a deal-breaker for many. That said, we expect enterprising Android hackers to have a workaround for that before too long.

Monster solar tornadoes discovered

For the first time, huge solar tornadoes have been filmed swirling deep inside the solar corona ? the sun's superheated atmosphere. But if you're imagining the pedestrian tornadoes that we experience on Earth, think again.

These solar monsters, measuring the width of several Earths and swirling at speeds of up to 190,000 miles per hour, aren't only fascinating structures; they may also trigger violent magnetic eruptions that can have drastic effects on our planet.

NEWS: Solar Storm Warning Satellite on Last Legs

In one example observed on Sept. 25, 2011, solar researchers from the UK used the high-definition cameras onboard NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) to track solar gases as hot as 2 million Kelvin (3.6 million degrees Fahrenheit) getting sucked from the bottom of a solar prominence and spiral high into the corona. The solar tornado then developed for three hours, gases traveling in spiral paths for around 200,000 kilometers (120,000 miles).

"Prominences are tangled magnetic fields trapping cold and dense plasma in the solar corona," Xing Li, solar physicist at Aberystwyth University, told Discovery News. "These often erupt spectacularly and fly out into space as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and large CMEs will impact our space weather and space technology in a significant way when they are heading toward the Earth.

"What drives these eruptions is still not clear and is very important to gain an understanding of CME initiation (so that we can possibly predict such events)."

NEWS: Modern Society Threatened by Solar Storms

As mankind becomes more dependent on sensitive technology, it is critical that we develop new and more sophisticated ways to predict the sun's next "temper tantrum." As it turns out, these twisted tornadoes may hold the key to predicting when the next CME will be launched.

"This unique and spectacular tornado must play a role in triggering global solar storms," said co-discoverer Huw Morgan, also at Aberystwyth University.

"These tornadoes may help to produce favorable conditions for CMEs to occur," Li added, pointing out that the tornadoes his team studied coincided with CME eruptions as observed by other instruments monitoring the wider corona.

Also, the tornadoes observed so far by Li and Morgan often occur at the root of where CMEs are initiated. As the dynamic structures wind-up magnetic fields and drag powerful electric currents high into the corona, these tornadoes could generate the conditions ripe for CME eruptions, they theorize.

But to observe the tornadoes in the first place requires a bit of luck.

Firstly, as they are magnetic structures, if the tornado is empty of radiating plasma, they will remain invisible. Only when hot plasma is being dragged high into the corona can they be seen. Conversely, should the tornado be completely flooded with plasma, you wouldn't see the motion of the material as the radiating plasma would be completely washed out.

Li highlights the need for discrete objects inside the swirling mass so they can be tracked as they move around the tornado. He likens this to the dust and bits of debris that a terrestrial tornado would pick up. Without these objects, we couldn't "see" the spinning wind currents. The same goes for solar tornadoes; discrete "blobs" of plasma can be tracked as they are accelerated and carried high into the corona by the tornado's magnetic field.

"Also, we believe that the angle you view the tornado from is important," Li added. "For example, if you imagine the slinky structure mentioned above, if you view it from the side it may not appear so clearly as a tornado."

In the past, observers have spotted prominences that they described as "tornadoes," but in the days before the SDO was launched, the necessary definition and rapid image capturing techniques simply weren't available.

This research, including the first video of a solar tornado the researchers refer to as "the beast" (pictured top), was presented at the National Astronomy Meeting (NAM) in Manchester on Thursday. Animations of the tornado, plus more imagery, can be found on Li's research page.

Emerging fungal infection in South West U.S. mimics cancer

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? An emerging fungal infection of the gastrointestinal tract that mimics cancer and inflammatory bowel disease appears to be emerging in the Southwestern United States and other desert regions, according to Mayo Clinic researchers in Arizona investigating the disease. The invasive fungus, Basidiobolus ranarum, is typically found in the soil, decaying organic matter and the gastrointestinal tracts of fish, reptiles, amphibians, and bats.

Mayo researchers studied 44 cases of human gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis reported from around the world, including 17 from Arizona, one from southern Utah and one from elsewhere in the U.S. Eight of the 44 patients died. Mayo's review of the cases is published online in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Basidiobolomycosis is usually a subcutaneous infection in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world that develops following traumatic inoculation of the fungus under the skin. The emergence of gastrointestinal involvement with Basidiobolus in arid regions has been considered unusual.

"The exact mode of acquisition of this gastrointestinal infection is unclear, although consumption of contaminated food or dirt is the favored hypothesis," says lead author H.R. Vikram, M.D., an infectious diseases physician at Mayo Clinic, where seven of the 19 U.S. cases studied were treated. "The infection is still considered so rare that no one had put together a complete description." He adds that more study needs to be done to determine how this infection is contracted, what underlying diseases might predispose patients to this infection and how best to treat it. He emphasizes that early recognition is key to successful treatment.

The first U.S. case of gastrointestinal Basidiobolus infection was reported in 1986. The CDC subsequently investigated six cases in Arizona between 1994 and 1999. This sparked the interest of researchers at Mayo Clinic in Arizona to study this infection.

Patients with this rare fungal infection had non-specific symptoms such as abdominal pain or a mass that could be felt on examination. Before a conclusive diagnosis of the fungal infection was made, most patients were thought to have an abdominal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease or diverticulitis. Surgical resection of the area of involvement and prolonged antifungal therapy successfully treated most patients.

Newsies The Musical Reviews | The Disney Blog

A couple of big reviews are in for Newsies The Musical, the Broadway edition. While the crowds may be entertained by the dancing, often to the point of giving multiple standing ovations each night, the critics have less kind about the finer points of the story going as far to call it a collection of tropes from previous musicals.

I?m not sure that?s fair, but it?s a complaint I?ve seen leveled at a lot of musicals recently, so I?m not sure it?s a complaint about Newsies, so much as it is about a general lack of originality on Broadway at the moment.

Ben Brantley in the NY Times says:

Though there is little originality in these dance numbers, they have enough raw vitality to command the attention and even stir the blood. Or they would if they knew when to quit. But just when you think a number is over, it starts up again, and no sooner are you recovering from that one, then there?s another one, with all the same darn back flips, pirouettes, etc. I commend the cast members for always appearing to be excited by what they?re doing. Unfortunately, that is not the same as being exciting.

Jeremy Gerard at Bloomberg can only bring himself to say this (my paragraphing):

?Newsies? gets syrupy faster than I hoped for and while never less than assured, its efforts to earn applause can come mighty close to pandering. Fierstein is a sentimentalist at heart, and the hokiness gets free reign. The songs feel stamped from molds, the music predictable and the words banal.

The Hollywood Reporter, on the other hand, has more praise for Disney?s ability to tap into current trends with an old property:

If this sounds like a rose-colored Occupy Wall Street fantasy, it more or less is, which is no small irony coming from the biggest corporate presence on Broadway. However, Fierstein?s straightforward book is concerned less with tapping into today?s debate about income inequality and worker injustice than with joining the dots of a classic boy-meets-girl-and-tackles-titan tale. Chief among many improvements on the movie is its strengthening of the love story.

Critics do what they are paid to do, critique. You can choose to take it or leave it. Either way, the audience doesn?t mind as the initial run out performed expectations and Disney has added more shows that are already filling up way ahead of time. There?s something to be said about being the hottest ticket on the great white way.

Human brain organised like a 3D 'New York City' grid

The human brain has been described as "the most complex object in the known universe", comprising tens of billions of connecting nerve fibres seemingly tangled like a huge bowl of spaghetti.

But if a team led by Van Wedeen of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston is correct, this staggering complexity arises from a seductively simple underlying structure, revealed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). If you straighten out its folds, Wedeen argues, the brain consists of a three-dimensional grid of fibres.

It is a big idea that could help unravel mysteries of brain development and evolution, and help link neurological and psychiatric disorders to abnormalities in brain structure. "I was immediately intrigued by the idea as an organizing principle for brain connectivity," says Olaf Sporns, a cognitive neuroscientist at Indiana University in Bloomington.

So have Wedeen and his colleagues uncovered the brain's fundamental organising principle, or is their grid just part of a more complex geometry? "To me the jury is out," says David Van Essen of Washington University in St Louis, Missouri, one of the leaders of the Human Connectome Project, which is working to produce a comprehensive map of the brain's neural connections.

Follow the water

For years, brain-mappers have used a technique called diffusion tensor imaging, which tracks the diffusion of water through biological tissues, to follow fibres through the brain, seeing how one region connects to another.

Wedeen's research used a related method called diffusion spectrum MRI which also maps nerve fibres by tracking the movement of water molecules but is good at highlighting where fibres cross.

In studies on people and other primates, this revealed sheets of parallel fibres running at 90 degrees to each another, much like a woven fabric. These sheets are in turn arranged at right angles to one another, giving a three-dimensional grid.

The grid is most obvious in lower primates such as the Galago bushbaby. Moving up the primate tree, there are progressively more folds and curves, but the underlying grid structure remains.

Evolutionary directions

This would help explain how brains wire themselves together. The orientations of the grid correspond to up-down, right-left and front-back body axes laid down in the earliest stages of embryonic development, Wedeen argues. This allows nerve fibres to grow in the right direction by following simple developmental rules controlled by biochemical signals ? in a similar way to how the grid of New York City's streets makes it easy to give someone directions to a specific destination.

The grid may also help to solve the puzzle of how complex brains evolved. If the brain were organized like a tangle of spaghetti, says Wedeen, it would be difficult to see how mutations could lead to incremental changes in connectivity on which natural selection could act.

"Try going into your basement and randomly rewiring your house," Wedeen says. "In a grid structure, it's much easier to imagine changes in the developmental code producing adaptive changes in behaviour." Similarly, a readily re-wired grid helps to explain how people are able to recover from brain injuries by making new connections to regain lost functions.

Such a three-dimensional grid would provide a coordinate system to standardise studies linking abnormalities in brain anatomy to neurological and psychiatric disorders. These studies are hampered by large natural variation from person to person, which makes it hard to align brain scans to reveal key differences in specific structures.

In the long run, it may also aid researchers striving to grow tissue grafts to repair brain injuries or treat neurodegenerative conditions. In theory, growing tissue on scaffolds that mimic the grid structure should help it to form connections with the brain after being engrafted.

Spaghetti junction

The grid is an attractive idea to many neuroscientists, but some doubt that it is the whole story. "My concern is that they may have oversimplified and overgeneralised in their optimism that this will apply brain-wide," says Van Essen. He thinks that the brain also contains fibres criss-crossing in other orientations.

The problem is that diffusion MRI can't detect nerve fibres directly. "This is not a microscope," says Marsel Mesulam of Northwestern University in Chicago, who studies how neural networks are affected by dementia and other cognitive disorders.

"We're looking at reconstructed images based on the movement of water molecules in a magnetic field." This means that changes in machine set-up or data analysis could alter what is seen.

Marco Catani, a specialist in diffusion MRI at the King's College London Institute of Psychiatry, argues that Wedeen's method is likely to miss fibres crossing at angles less than about 70 degrees. Catani says his team has seen such fibres using a different diffusion imaging technique.

Wedeen is adamant that his own team would have seen fibres crossing at shallower angles if they were common. He adds that a second diffusion imaging technique gave similar results.

Who is right? Expect a wave of follow-up studies using different methods ? including painstaking examination of the brain's microscopic anatomy ? as neuroscientists try to answer that question.

Austin food and drink : CUTE + DELICIOUS

With a schedule full of film watching in Austin, I didn?t expect to do a ton of restaurant sampling. Shawn, on the other hand, plotted out the best places to go based on everyone?s recommendations. Thank goodness for a husband that balances out my movie madness, since some of the meals were not to be missed.

Possibly my favorite of the restaurants was Bouldin Creek where I had two of the most delicious breakfasts. The first, a vegan benedict, was so good I insisted we go back another day. I?m not sure exactly how they prepare their tofu, but it is amazing: seasoned and lightly coated in nutritional yeast. Their potato cakes are also worth a mention as they?re far beyond any hash brown I?ve ever had.

I was also a big fan of Veggie Heaven. In particular the tangerine mushrooms were the kind of thing I crave often. It is the sort of dish I see on a menu in many places but never lives up to what I?m imagining in my head. Yet, these saucy & perfectly breaded mushrooms were everything I hoped they would be. The steamed buns were also very good. Let?s not forget the bubble tea, it was the best.

We also happened upon this adorable place that had just opened called Hillside Farmacy. There were only a couple of vegan options on the menu, like the soup of the day, which happened to be carrot cardamom, but the interior is lovely and they have Stumptown coffee and a bar. It?s definitely worth a visit just to check out the beautiful renovation they?ve done of the space, and of course, have some coffee. I wanted to live inside this shop.

Not only does Austin have some lovely vegan friendly restaurants, there are also some very nice bars with mixed drinks I love. The drink menu and atmosphere at the East Side Show Room was by far my favorite. And of course, as I mentioned before, Austin will now be known to me as the first place I ever tried boba and subsequently fell in love with it.

Even though we?d visited Austin before, it was great to go to a completely new set of restaurants and food trucks. Can?t wait to go back and try some more.
